A Bit More About Me
In the spring of 2019, I traveled to South Korea, the Philippines, and China to visit friends, observe classrooms, and teach. In the Philippines, I taught disadvantaged teenage girls about mental health and problem solving, and spent time with students outside the classroom to discover their world through music, visiting homes, and making food together. I let my students direct the learning and create connections to fit their contexts and challenges.
In the 2014–15 and 2015–16 school years, I was a Care Group Leader at Steinbach Bible College. During these times, I mentored new students, helped to foster a healthy community, created learning experiences, helped with homework, and connected with each student in my group one-on-one. These experiences made me realize just how much I love teaching and connecting with others, and that the best way to do these is through small groups and one-on-one interactions.
I have always loved music and theater. I play the flute, ukulele, piano, and I currently sing in my church choir. Over the past few years, I have been involved in various drama productions and toured with a small drama troupe teaching young people about theatre/improv across Manitoba and Ontario. Teaching both music and theatre is a perfect way for students to gain confidence, social skills, and perseverance.

Teaching Philosophy
Differentiated
Every student is unique, and here at Thiessen Teaching, you will find that each student is allowed to learn in their own unique way. That’s why we offer a variety of options in services to make it possible to find something right for your family’s education.
Relational
Students excel when working with a teacher who cares about them as individuals, and who is interested in more than just their academics. One-on-one and small group interactions make this possible at Thiessen Teaching.
Discovery
I believe that the teacher is a guide in learning. Students need to be scaffolded up to more difficult material by being given the tools to problem solve and discover what they can do. This empowers and engages students in every subject area.
"Ashley has created fun, engaging and relevant learning environments for her grade 9 Social Studies students. She is purposeful about the amount of time spent on each item in class while demonstrating flexibility in response to the student’s readiness to cover new material. She is careful to revise her approach in subsequent classes to increase her effectiveness as a teacher. Ashley prioritizes inclusivity, engagement and building student-teacher relationships."
